She was born on June 26, 1912, in Madison, the daughter of Ben and Elizabeth (Gunning) Henke. She was a longtime resident of Sun Prairie and lived in Blue Mounds prior to moving here. Her employment included working at Wisconsin Porcelain Company, Wisconsin Cheeseman, Triggs Bakery, Royle Publishing as well as waitressing at the Knotty Pine and Rickman's. She was a lifelong member of the VFW Auxiliary and a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Her many interests included bowling for 42 years, of which she bowled many 600s, quilting, sewing, volunteering at the Red Barn, helping with bingo at the Willows Nursing Home, and she never forgot to bake a cake for each of her children's and grandchildren's birthdays.
Mary Ann is survived by her children, Donald (Thecla) Starker of Sun Prairie, Eugene (Deloris) Starker of San Antonio, Texas, Marie Roth and Penny (Merlin Buckley) Emerson both of Sun Prairie; grandchildren, David (Lori) Starker, Todd Starker, Sherry (Gary) Wolf, Terri (Don) Chatfield, Brian (Stephanie) Starker, Lori (John Garrish) Persyn, Kurt Roth and Brent Roth; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; cousin, June Lenz; brothers-in-law, Harland (Judy) Emerson and Robert Emerson; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Leonard Starker and Bert Emerson; brother, Glen; and great-granddaughter, Sara.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009, at 11 a.m. at OUR SAVIOR'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 550 Lincoln Drive, Sun Prairie with the Rev. Dr. David J. Berggren officiating. Friends and family are invited to call at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in West Blue Mounds Lutheran Cemetery, Blue Mounds. Memorials would be appreciated to Our Savior's Lutheran Church or the Red Barn.
