New Orleans cop from Bethlehem killed in crash will be remembered in Lehigh Valley

A New Orleans police officer who was raised in the Lehigh Valley and killed in a Saturday crash will be remembered in Hellertown this weekend, according to his father.

Christopher Cambiotti, 42, of Slidell, La., was a passenger in a sports car that was struck by an SUV driven by William Scott, 26, of Hattiesburg, Miss., on Route 49 near Hattiesburg, according to reports by The Times-Picayune.

Cambiotti was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, the newspaper reports. No charges have been filed in the crash, but police indicated the SUV's speed may have been a factor in the wreck, according to reports.

A public viewing for Cambiotti, a Bethlehem Catholic High School and Moravian College graduate who grew up in Lower Saucon Township, is slated for 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Falk Funeral Home, 1418 Main St. in Hellertown. A funeral will follow 10 a.m. Monday at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, 1408 Easton Road in Hellertown.

Henry Cambiotti Sr., of Lower Saucon Township, said his son was passionate about police work and had a big heart.

"He'd give you the shirt off his back if he could. He had a heart of gold; everybody loved him," Cambiotti said. "We lost our diamonds when we lost him."

Christopher Cambiotti was a first lieutenant and 15-year veteran in the department, according to his father. The Lower Saucon Township man said his son took work seriously and believed in public service.

Cambiotti graduated in 1997 with a degree in business administration from Moravian.

Cambiotti's father said his son was determined to go into police work and applied for jobs in California and Louisiana. When the New Orleans Police Department offered him a job, Henry Cambiotti said his son did not look back.

"He grew to really like it down there," he said.

Christopher Cambiotti was in a relationship with Maggie Darling, a New Orleans homicide detective, whom he hoped to marry, according to the deceased officer's father.

A processional, memorial service and Mass is planned in New Orleans to memorialize the officer at St. Louis Cathedral in the city, according to Henry Cambiotti.

Cambiotti said he and his wife Carmen will not be able to make it for the ceremony, but a long-time friend and former colleague of his son, Donald Paisant, agreed to get video of the procession. Cambiotti said Paisant plans to come to the Lehigh Valley for the funeral and will bring the video with him to share with family.

"I really don't know how I could manage this by myself," Cambiotti said of the support and assistance he's received from Paisant and others.

Cambiotti will be laid to rest at the Holy Savior Cemetery in Bethlehem, his father said.

In addition to his parents and girlfriend, Christopher Cambiotti is survived by his brother, Henry Cambiotti Jr.; his sister-in-law, Karen; and his nephew and godson, Nicholas.
