Mrs. Bethune died of causes related to age Friday in her home. She was 85.
She was born March 10, 1908, in Haskell, Ark., and was raised and schooled in Louisiana. She had lived in the Portland area for the past 45 years. Mrs. Bethune was a homemaker. She had worked as a midwife for many years and taught classes in the practice of midwifery. She was a longtime member of Bethesda Christian Church. Her husband, Abram Bethune, died in 1975.
Survivors include her brother, Joseph Bankston of Oakland, Calif.; sister, Margaret Thompson of Portland; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Her sons, James, Carl and Abram, died earlier.
Private interment will be in River View Cemetery.
The family suggests remembrances be contributions to the Midwife's Association.
