CORP. BRAND KILLED IN TARAWA BATTLE
Corp. Robert J. Brand, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Brand, 2318 S. Sixteenth street, has been reported as having been killed in action during the fighting at Tarawa, according to word received today by his parents from the War Department.
On Jan. 15, 1944, his parents received word that he was missing in action, and no other word has been received until the report of his death at this time.
Corp. Brand joined the U.S. Marines on Jan. 6, 1942, after enlisting in the Marine Corps on Dec. 24, 1941. Following his basic training in California he was sent to Tulagi in August, 1942, and later to Guadalcanal where he was wounded in action in Jan. 1943. On Sept. 20, 1943, he received the Purple Heart award in recognition of the wounds received at Guadalcanal.
Corp. Brand was born Aug. 9, 1921 in Sheboygan, and attended the St. Peter Claver school. He was graduated from the Central high school in 1938 and then went to work at the Verifine Dairy Products Co. and later was employed at the Badger State Tannery. He had never been home since joining the armed services.
Two brothers, Joe and Jim, twins, are also serving in the armed forces. Joe is a seaman first class in the navy and Jim is a private in the army, serving with the Amphibious Engineers. Both are overseas at the present time.
Survivors are the parents and a sister, Mary Ann at home and the two brothers.
A requiem mass for Corp. Brand will be held Monday at 9 a.m. at St. Peter Claver church.
