James ("Frank") Curfman was the second son of ten children born to James and Elizabeth Cain Curfman who lived near Cain's Run north of Reedy, West Virginia. His mother's father Rev. Thomas H. Cain was the Baptist preacher for many years at the Good Hope Baptist Church on Cain's Run. His father served in the Confederate infantry during the Civil War. His grandfather, Michael Christopher Curfman served in the Maryland Militia during the War of 1812, and his great-great-grandfather, Daniel Curfman Jr. served in the Pennsylvania Militia during the American War of Independence.
