Laura (Allen) Hawes was born in Fredericksburg, IN on 5 Jul 1893, the oldest daughter of Robert Allen and his second wife, Sarah (Shanks) Allen. She worked as a telephone operator in a grocery store. She met Ross Hawes, who was in Fredericksburg to build bridges, when she was only 16. They married 15 Jan 1914, and shortly after moved to Indianapolis where they remained the rest of their lives, raising two children, Charlene and Harold.
According to her daughter Charlene, Laura had only an 8th grade education. Despite that, she read frequently, including two newspapers each day. She loved horses and was an avid baseball, basketball, and ice-hockey fan.

Services for Mrs. Laura L Hawes, 82, 1333 North Oakland Avenue, widow of Ross D. Hawes, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Harry W. Moore Arlington Chapel, with burial in Washington Park East Cemetery. She died Wednesday in a local nursing home. A native of Fredericksburg, Mrs. Hawes had lived in Indianapolis since 1914. She was a member of Centenary Christian Church and Brookside Chapter 481, Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Charlene H. McMahon of Indianapolis, and son, Harold Hawes of Atlanta, Ga.
