Former Hastings resident Donald C. J. Gray, 79, of Potomac, MD., died Friday Feb. 26, 1999, at his home.
Services are Tuesday at St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathledral in Hastings with the Very Rev. Richard J. Martindale officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.
Mr. Gray was born Sept. 28, 1919, to Garold C. J. and Marie (Burschess) Gray in Fremont. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1937. He attended Colorado State College, Aircraft Institute, Occidental College, Brookings Institution and Choinard Art Institute. On Dec. 27, 1942, he married Mary Jane Einsel. He was a civilian pilot. He worked as a design engineer with Lockheed Aircraft Corp. He was a co-founder and president of Circle Irrigation Co. in Hastings and pioneered pivot-mounted sprinkler irrigation systems. That company was acquired by a Wisconsin conglomerate in 1969. In 1970 he moved to Washington, D.C. He was the commissioner of the Federal Supply Service from 1984 until retiring in 1996.
He held a number of key positions in professional, governmental and other organizations including a presidential commission to the Committee for Purchase from the Blind. He also served on the American National Standards Institute board of directors and the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing board and was a member of the American Defense Preparedness Association executive committee. He was an active layman in the Episcopal Church. He was head usher and vestryman at St. John's Church in Washington. He served as a school board president and Chamber of Commerce director. He was a master mason, and 33 Degree member of the Scottish Rite and past potentate of the Tehama Shrine, all in Hastings.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Donald C. J. Jr. and Kenneth, both of Lincoln; two sisters, Doray Saddler of Denver and Jean Miller of Hiawasee, Ga.; one brother, Robert of Miami; and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral or Shriner's Crippled Children Transportation Fund.
