Martha Pendergrass was the daughter of Willis & Nancy A. Pendergrass. She first married Thomas McLain, with whom she had three sons - John W., George Columbus, and Willis Morgan. After McLain's death, Martha married George Washington Whitehead on September 18, 1885, in Jackson County, Alabama. To this union was born children including Nancy E. "Rosie" (Holcomb), Mary Jane (Baker), Susan Adelaide (Morgan), Charles L., James T., and Mattie Ann (Kite).

Her grave, like George's, is marked by a rock, and is located near the grave of their daughter, Rosie Holcomb.
