He was chief justice of the court 1933-1934 and 1945-1946 In 1946, Judge Beals was the presiding judge at the trial of 23 Nazi doctors in Nuremberg. His father James Burrill Beals was b. 23 Sep 1845 in Providence, RI, and died Dec 31, 1888. He married Katherine McMillen 28 April 1875. He was the son of Samuel James Beals (1820-1857) and Susan Burrill Greene (1823-1904, both of Rhode Island.
