Edward M. Brooks, 79, of Monroe died at 9:05 a.m. Thursday at home.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to service time at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Rupp Funeral Home. Rev. Lawrence Detruf, pastor of the First Church of God, will officiate, and burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle, with military honors conducted by VFW Post 1138, Monroe.

Born February 20, 1929, in Harlan, Kentucky, he was the son of Henley and Lillie (Winters) Brooks. He married June Ford on August 14, 1948, in Erie Michigan.

He was a carpenter for Local 1301, retiring in 1989; a member of the First Church of God, and a member of the Monroe County Democratic Party.

He enlisted in the Michigan State Troops on May 4, 1944; then the US Army during WW II. He served from September 9, 1946, to December 19, 1947, and earned the Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal, Japan and a marksman with a carbine.

He enjoyed the out-of-doors, vacationing "up north" and spending time with his family.

Surviving are his wife; sons, Edward "Michael" Brooks of Monroe, Gary W. Brooks of Toledo and Mark A. (Pamela) Brooks of Ida; daughters, Lorna G. (William) Myers of Monroe, Dr. Denise D. (Steven Starring) Brooks of Monroe, Julie A. (Fred) Jacobs of Dundee and Jacqueline D. (Ben) Guthrie of Monroe; brothers, Edmund (Evelyn) Brooks of Lucky, OH, Clarence (Bernetta) Brooks of Monroe and Vernon (Linda) Brooks of Monroe; sisters, Eva Rhea of Lakeland, FL, Naomi (John) Fowler of the Villages, FL and Mary Toole of Toledo; eleven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Charles, Enos and John Brooks.
