Monroe J. Hoffert, 76, of Penn Township, died Monday in St. Joseph Medical Center, Bern Township, where he had been a patient since last Tuesday.

He was born in Reading on Dec. 7, 1935. Monroe was the son of the late Monroe B. and [Rose] Marie (Furillo) Hoffert.

As a young man, Monroe always wanted his own salvage yard. So in 1955 he started Hoffert Auto Parts. He repaired cars, sold car parts and towed vehicles. Over the years the business grew so great that it became one of the oldest yards with vintage cars on the East Coast.

Hoffert was featured in two well-known car magazines: Northern Rodder and Cars & Parts. The salvage yard became well-known worldwide. Hoffert had customers in Brazil, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Holland, Belgium and many more countries to purchase car parts. Many customers turned into lifelong and wonderful friends while doing business with Monroe.

Monroe loved towing and he loved cars.

He also enjoyed shooting ground hogs and deer and fishing. He loved eating hot peppers and garlic.

Surviving are his wife, Anna (Wagner) Hoffert of Penn Township; and daughters, Sharon A., wife of Mark Rutherford, of Reading and Donna, wife of Carl Houck, of Penn Township.

Monroe had a grandson, Christopher L. Raifsnider, and a granddaughter, Vicki L. Raifsnider. He also had four great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Monroe had a companion of 30 years, Sandra L. Ditt-man of Penn Township. Sandra was Monroe's business partner. She also was Monroe's caregiver and loving companion.

Monroe will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
