Born in Nepal, South Asia, he served as a Rifleman in the 1/5 Royal Gurkha Regiment, Frontier Forces, British Army. On November 10, 1944, at Monte San Bartolo, Italy, while leading a scouting patrol Rifleman Gurung came across German soldiers dug into the mountainside.
