Sharon Olson, the youngest of four children of Nita and Toby Olson, grew up in San Marino, California, and graduated from Stanford in 1969. During college she studied in Italy for six months in 1967. She has an M.L.S. from U.C. Berkeley and an M.A. in Comparative Literature from the University of Oregon. Her career as a librarian at the Palo Alto City Library (Palo Alto, California) spanned the years 1978-2007. A chapbook of her poems, Clouds Brushed in Later, was published in 1987, and a full-length book of her poetry, The Long Night of Flying, was published by Sixteen Rivers Press (www.sixteenrivers.org) in March 2006. A second book appeared in 2019 published by Cherry Grove Collections, Will There Be Music? She has published numerous articles about the Sandford family of New Jersey in the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey. She and her husband William Sumner moved to Annapolis, Maryland in 2021.
