Bio

I wrote the first biography of John Montgomery Ward, Baseball's Radical for All Seasons, a runner-up for the Seymour Medal. Ward was a Baseball Hall of Fame player/attorney/golf star.

Bill Gleason, host, The Sportswriters on TV, in his Daily SouthTown column devoted to the book Baseball's Radical for All Seasons: "John Montgomery Ward made much more than baseball history. He made American History. Every baseball fan and historian should read this remarkable book. "

This first biography of Hall of Fame player/human rights pioneer Ward is out of print, but is now available from the author, because I recently found an unopened box in the back of a closet ! Can be signed and dedicated personally. All are new, sturdy hardbacks, with colorful covers, in excellent condition. [email protected]

Jerome Holtzman, Official Historian of Major League Baseball, in his Chicago Tribune column devoted to the book: recommends Baseball's Radical for All Seasons: "Ward was among the most fascinating figures of the 19th Century."

Ward created sports' first union (in 1885) and was its only President, while he fought to integrate baseball as one of its top stars. His lonely battles were banished from history's pages, but Ward's legacy is now strong. Ward was named the 16th most influential person in baseball history by a poll of experts, in the last Total Baseball, Major League Baseball's official encyclopedia. Ranked at number 1 is Babe Ruth. Next to Ruth, Ward is known as the second best ever to be both a position player, and a pitcher. Ranked at number 2 most influential is Jackie Robinson, who finally cracked the race barrier Ward hammered against, after Ward brought the first Hispanic & the first Native American into the majors, in the 19th Century.
