(A rubbing is a piece of vellum paper placed over the front of the stone and softly rubbed with a special wax to capture the inscriptions and designs. When done by someone with experience like myself, this is NO way harms the stone. I have been doing rubbings for 10 years, and those of us who do rubbings also help preserve the headstones- we gently brush off lichen and dirt so that we get the clearest rubbing possible, and the gentle cleaning slows damage from moss and lichen)
