I have been researching my maternal and paternal families whom have very diverse backgrounds and ethnicities for almost 30 yrs since I was a teenager. I started with interviews and gathering pictures. I didn't know that they would be of a great resource, now. When I acknowledged my Grandma looked different from me ...a little black girl; I began a journey of discovering who I was and in addition, who my mom was that looked like she didn't belong to this white woman because 'ah... my mom had cold black straight hair-- way down her back and high cheek bones. Looking at my Mom and her Mom I got interested in researching my Mom's dad, which brought me back to Virginia, again! Most of my maternal and paternal families roots lie in Virginia.
