Bio

My great grandmother was Lena "Bessie" Nikkel Newlan. My grandfather, Curtis Newlan, had taken me to visit the Nikkeltown cemetery when I was a small boy. My mother, Claire Newlan Kelley, had said, in the past, that Nikkeltown was founded by her great grandfather, Peter Nikkel(father of Lena). Found the cemetery yesterday (05/25/2014). Took my wife, Kathy Vadnais Kelley, and her sister Karen - whose father, Earl Vadnais, was born at Nikkeltown (buried in Yates Center). Took my 85 year old mother and her neighbor, Frances Dickson, whose father was also born at Nikkeltown. My cousin, Marlayne Boblett (member of Find A Grave), has a vast geneology of the Nikkel and Klingenberg families. When my grandpa took me there some 57 years ago, the cemetery was grown up in weeds and contained within a small fence, overgrown by a hedgerow. I was too young to know where we were, and my mom had never been to Nikkeltown. What a privilege to take photos of Mom by her great grandfather's grave! I have photos of all the headstones and the old Nikkeltown schoolhouse. Two stones are broken and illegible.
