I was born in Columbia, SC. My husband and I now reside in Lexington, SC. We have two sons and two grandchildren. I caught the genealogy fever in the summer of 2011 when I visited my last Whitaker aunt in Sullivan's Island, SC. She gave me a CD that had a book scanned on it. It included the Whitaker and Cantey history on it. The book is Our Children's Ancestry written by Sarah Cantey Whitaker Allen from Milledgeville, GA. I was so amazed when I looked at the CD and then I was hooked. My father's family came from Milledgeville, GA (a line that came from England to VA in the early 1600s, moved to Halifax, NC, through Camden, SC, to outside of Milledgeville near the Oconee River after the Revolutionary War). My grandfather is James Cantey Whitaker, III, my father was the IV and my brother is the V. I wanted to know more about my direct line and my mother's line from Saluda, SC (Crouch). My search has broadened from the Whitaker and Crouch families to more research on the Cantey family including the surnames - Hughes from AL, McGregor, Taylor, Calvert, Hirons, Raiford, Bollin, Passailaigue, Crovat,Cay, Pezant and Landry. I am also searching the Smith line in North Carolina and Hudson family in SC. I thoroughly enjoy learning of new family members and the times that they lived in. It's a passion in me to gather this information and to pass on to other generations. I am the story teller in these families, to put flesh on their bones and make them live again.
