Bio

Been doing genealogy research since 1974 when I co-founded the original Spencer Family Association with 4 other Spencer descendants. The Association has evolved into the Spencer Historical & Genealogical Society Inc. A native of Western New York State, I lived for 30-plus years in California, returning to WNY permanently in 1998. I am a descendant of the youngest of four Spencer brothers who arrived in Boston, MA in the early 1630s. The four brothers were all born in Bedfordshire, England, and participated in the Massachusetts Bay Colony with John Winthrop, altho they were not Puritans. My immigrant ancestor, Gerard Spencer, was a founder of Haddam, Middlesex Co, Connecticut, where he and his wife produced 13 children. From Haddam; offspring of Gerard were proprietors at Spencer's Town, which became Spencertown, in the County of Columbia, New York, currently in the Town of Austerlitz. Subsequently, members of the Spencers of Spencertown settled in the new Town of Maryland in Otsego Co, New York, then migrated to Cattaraugus Co, New York , and to Erie County, NY where I was born in 1934.
