Robert G Hess, Jr, PhD, RN, FAAN, is former Executive Vice President, Chief Clinical Executive, for OnCourse Learning, Healthcare, which publishes Nurse.com (formerly Nursing Spectrum and Nurseweek) and Continuingeducation.com. In support of the company mission, he represents OCL as its formal representative, thought leader, and network connection to people from client and professional organizations in the healthcare and education industries; acts as an internal consultant for management, healthcare, and education areas; manages the creation of written and spoken communications for OCL healthcare-related publications; and supervises any OCL-involved research endeavors.

In the 25 years before this new role, he was the Executive Vice President, Education Programs & Credentialing, leading the largest CE providerships in the world for nurses and dietitians, as well as 22 additional health professions, including physicians and pharmacists. In 2016, he granted four million CE contact hours through more than 3,000 currently active educational activities in all modes of delivery. The interprofessional team he left behind coordinates the development of educational activities with thousands of authors and reviewers. He still has a heavy influence in these activities.

Dr. Hess is the Founder & CEO of the Forum for Shared Governance and webmaster for www.sharedgovernance.org. He is the author of the only instruments for measuring governance in healthcare organizations, used globally in 300 healthcare systems, and coauthor of a new instrument, Council Health, which measures shared governance councils’ effectiveness. He is coauthor of the only current book on implementing shared governance and the world’s leading researcher on shared governance.

Dr. Hess is the past Vice Chair of the ANCC’s Commission on Accreditation and a past Director of the American Association for Men in Nursing. Its former Chair, he is Advisor to the Development Committee (personal fundraising) of the American Academy of Nursing, and a current Trustee for the Foundation of the National Student Nurses Association.
