Bio

Hi! Hope you're having a good day.

My family had more than our fair share of death last year. If you could leave flowers I would be really appreciative. Don't forget to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you.
In Loving Memory of:
Judith Isabella Mellor - my grandmother
James William Bennett - my great-uncle
Thomas Ross Mellor - my great-uncle
Gregory Hayes Mellor - my uncle
Valarie June Liverton - my great-aunt

A little about me, if you're interested
I'm 23 years old, born, raised, and living in Melbourne, Australia. My trip to Europe in 2019 sparked an interest in history, and ever since I haven't been able to get enough of medieval and Renaissance-era European history. I also discovered a love for classical music (Franz Liszt is my favourite composer) and architecture, especially Baroque & Gothic styles.

How I got here
I discovered this website through Ancestry in early 2020, as I returned to my family tree. I was able to discover so much in a relatively short space of time thanks to the numerous people who had already trodden these paths before me. I can only imagine what it was like for genealogists in the pre-Internet age. My mother looks back on those days trawling through libraries and scanning through microfiche with her father fondly.

Tending to a virtual cemetery
I like to put information like BDM registration numbers and family relationships in the memorials I make on here. Behind each and every memorial is a life, a person, and I think it's nice to add more information where possible, even if you're not a relation. We can only learn so much from a single headstone. Looking deeper allows us to uncover hidden connections, and I think that is the most interesting and exciting part of what we do here!

Edits, transfers, photos
Don't hesitate to send in suggestions or corrections if you notice something wrong. I sometimes make educated guesses or estimations, usually with non-relations, and I imagine at least a few of them somewhere aren't quite right.
If you're related to a memorial that I've added, let me know and I'll most likely transfer it to you. I would rather the memorials I make to be in the hands of loved ones.
Photos that I've taken myself will be labelled as such in the captions. Feel free to use them however you wish—other people may have differing views, but I believe we need less unnecessary copyright in the world. This is a volunteer site, after all. Having said that I would like credit where possible if you use my photos on another website. I put a lot of time and effort into getting photos and making memorials, so a little effort on your end to acknowledge the source is greatly appreciated.
With regards to Springvale, a lot of my niche wall and rose memorial photos are of lower quality than I'd like simply because it would take too much time to get a really good photo for every single niche. This doesn't apply to photo requests—if I claim your request I will take the very best photo I can. If you want a better photo of any particular memorial please message me and I'll get one for you next time I visit.
Feel free to message me for any reason. I love connecting with people on here.

The morn is up again, the dewy morn,
With breath all incense, and with cheek all bloom,
Laughing the clouds away with playful scorn,
And living as if earth contain'd no tomb --
And glowing into day: we may resume
The march of our existence.
– Lord Byron, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, canto 98

'A soldier of the Union mustered out,'
Is the inscription on an unknown grave
At Newport News, beside the salt-sea wave,
Nameless and dateless; sentinel or scout
Shot down in skirmish, or disastrous rout
Of battle, when the loud artillery drave
Its iron wedges through the ranks of brave
And doomed battalions, storming the redoubt.
Thou unknown hero sleeping by the sea
In thy forgotten grave! with secret shame
I feel my pulses beat, my forehead burn,
When I remember thou hast given for me
All that thou hadst, thy life, thy very name,
And I can give thee nothing in return.
– Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, A Nameless Grave
