The field stone next to D E S is marked M S. Thankful, wife of Deacon Ebenezer Sheldon, is interred in the Old Burying Ground, Deerfield, MA., not in the Old Cemetery, Bernardston. The D E S may stand for Deacon Ebenezer Sheldon Jr. who died in 1790 and M S for his wife Mary [Hoyt] who died in 1786. This is a difficult situation to unravel/figure out who's who.
