NATHANIEL KEITH BURIAL GROUND

NATHANIEL KEITH was born 1810 in South Carolina to ELI HOOD KEITH "ELIUD" and BERTHULA MERCER "THRULY." Nathaniel's older brother Jesse Keith & his family were prominent in South Carolina. NATHANIEL & 3 of his brothers migrated to Alabama. Nathaniel owned a farm in Eclectic, Alabama. He was married (1) to Alpha Jenkins "Alphy" and had several children. After Alpha died, Nathaniel married (2) AMANDA ANN BRADSHAW, born 1817, daughter of JESSEE BRADSHAW & ELIZABETH GORDON in Coosa Co, AL. Amanda had been married to (1) Simeon Johnson and had 1 son, Joseph Simuel Johnson. Amanda married (2) William Edward James and had 1 daughter, Emma Elizabeth James 1848. Amanda married (3) NATHANIEL KEITH and had 1 daughter, MARTHA ELIZA JANE KEITH "ELIZA JANE" in 1858. Court records show NATHANIEL KEITH became Legal Guardian of Amanda's daughter Emma James. Amanda's son was grown at the time of their marriage. In 1863, NATHANIEL KEITH died and he is buried in the KEITH BURIAL GROUND on the Old Keith Farm, with only large rocks to mark his burial site. It is likely his 1st wife, Alphy is also buried there. Over the years, a number of his children were buried there with nice headstones. His son, James Nathaniel Keith married Amanda's niece, Sarah Melton, daughter of Delilah Bradshaw and GW Melton. Amanda & daughter, Eliza, were left destitute when his estate was settled. Amanda's brother Paschal Green Bradshaw "Pack" took them with his family to Tyler, Smith Co, TX. Her son, who loved Paschal, later followed and both are buried there. Amanda's daughter, Emma James married Alfred D. Betts and moved to Woodruff Co, AR. When he died, Amanda and Eliza Jane went there to live with Emma. Eliza Jane married ROBERT MONROE CARROLL, a prosperous farmer, who moved all of them to Erath Co, TX in the 1870s. He built a separate house for Amanda & Emma on the Carroll Farm. Amanda died 1899 and is buried in the Barbee Cemetery, Erath Co, TX. Her headstone reads AMANDA A. KEITH, WIFE OF NATHANIEL. Next to her was later buried her daughter Emma Betts (1930) and next to Emma, ELIZA CARROLL (MARTHA ELIZA JANE KEITH) 1920. Nathaniel Keith was by all accounts a good man he was definitely the love of Amanda's life.
