Clifford A. Tompkins RAPID CITY - Clifford A. Tompkins, 83, of Rapid City, died Tues., February 4, 2003, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.Clifford rode professional rodeo in his youth and also farmed for a while. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Radio Operator and Tank Destroyer. He fought at the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded a Purple Heart. On May 30, 1945, he married Joyce Molyneux in Northwich, England.He worked as a mechanic for some 30 years, including at the Ford garage in Rapid City. Clifford was an avid sports fan and played volleyball with the Senior Citizens until his death.He is survived by his wife, Joyce Tompkins of Rapid City; 5 children, Bryan Tompkins (Annette) of Rapid City, Marvyn Tompkins (Vicki) of Phoenix, Ariz., Barbara Eldridge (William) of Colorado Springs, Colo., Patricia Turnage (Russell) of Fort Worth, Texas, Katharine Fenton (Donald) of Nisland; 3 sisters, Myrtle Falk of Brookings, Nora Lehnhoff of Beresford, and Grace Drewes (Dale) of Arlington; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Anetta.Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2003, at First United Methodist Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Doug Diehl officiating.In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to First United Methodist Church of Rapid City.Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of the arrangements.Both Clifford and Joyce's ashes are scattered in the Black Hills in South Dakota.
