Krupa Connections

Jan Krupa, the patriarch of a family with deep ties to the Schuylkill County region of Pennsylvania, was born in 1883 in Rzeszow, Poland, part of the Galicia region which was under Austrian rule at the time of his birth. The son of Andrew and Catherine Krupa*, he emigrated to the United States in 1902, sailing from Hamburg, Germany on the S.S. Moltke to Boulogne, France and Plymouth, England before arriving at Ellis Island. Jan was married to Rozalia Tuczek on 28 October 1906 by Father Bernard Tomniak at St. Josaphat's Roman Catholic Church in Manayunk, an area of Philadelphia home to a large Polish settlement in the early 1900s. Their first child, Marianna, known as Mary throughout her life, was born in Manayunk and baptized at St. Josaphat's. Her remaining siblings were born after Jan relocated his family to Minersville in Schuylkill County, where he worked as an explosives man in the anthracite coal mines. Although two of their children, twins Frank and Thomas, died in early childhood, Mary and her other siblings grew to become healthy contributing members of their community, married, and had children of their own. [*Note: The spellings of the given and surnames for the family members in this virtual cemetery may differ from what is currently presented here. For example, the names of Jan Krupa's parents were spelled as "Andrew and Catherine Krupa" by one of Jan's children when completing Jan's death certificate, but would likely be different in Polish church records.]
