(Waynesville, Haywood County, North Carolina,USA)_____________________________________________________Cemetery notes and/or description:The Arrington Cemetery is an old family cemetery located in the Saunook Community just off 19-A & 23 By-Pass. This cemetery has not been used in over twenty years and is heavily over grown with underbrush. It was originally fenced in by barbed wire, but most is down now.Mr. Rufus Smathers who resided on Walkers Road gave some history and information on the cemetery. He was seven years old when his Mother, Julian Foster Smathers, died around 1904. Mrs. Julia (Ed) McClure owned the Arrington Cemetery which was located on her Father's (Manual Hooper) home place. Her grandfathter was Henry Plott. She sold the property to Rev. Albert Robinson and according to Mrs. McClure once counted over a hundred graves in the cemetery when they built the highway through the property. This cemetery is about one hundred fifty years old. Two black men were the first buried on this hill, being killed by accident when the railroad was being built through the area. This once relatively large cemetery now contains few marked graves and others are difficult to locate. There are still well marked tombstones in the cemetery. Manurvey Correll Conard and her son, Homer Conard, are buried in the grave yard. She was the Mother of Emeline Conard Reece Reed. Their graves are still very well marked with tombstones, whose pictures are posted on this page. There was two Confederate Soldiers buried here in the grave yard.
