Banty Cemetery

The original name of "Banty" cemetery is "Tubbs Yard" when this cemetery was set off from the Tubbs farm to be used as a burying place prior to 1749. Isaac Tubbs, a grandson of Isaac Tubbs [1682-1749], legally deeded this cemetery to the town of Lyme in 1785 before he removed to Mansfield, CT with his family. In the early 20th century, the map surveyors who were surveying this cemetery, did not know the original name and named it "Banty" because there was a family by that name living next door!! See how names get created?? This cemetery is not or was never called "Old Meeting House Hill Burying Ground circa 1756". This information is incorrect. Examination of deeds and other records have not shown this name once. The earliest dated stone is of that of Isaac Tubbs who died in March 1749-50.
