United State Exploring Expedition

Also shortened to the US ExEx. The United States Exploring Expedition was commanded by Charles Wilkes, United States Navy (USN) and explored around the world from 1838-1842, becoming the first to visit every continent or its islands. It is credited with discovering or proving the existence of the continent of Antarctica and chartering over 1400 miles of its coastline (present-day Wilkes Land) in January 1840. It mapped and charted numerous islands inland waterways, rivers and other physical features throughout the Pacific area, including the Fiji, Gilbert and Hawaiian Islands, Puget Sound, Black Lake and Black River, Chehalis River, Grays Harbor and Columbia River in the then Oregon Territory jointly claimed by Great Britain and the US. Members included United Stated Marine Quartermaster Sergeant Simeon Albert Stearns (in command of the US Marine detachment.
