A Virtual Cemetery created by Bill McKern

Hall of Fame for Great Americans

Completed in 1901 at New York University, it was donated by Helen Gould. Nominees must have been native born or naturalized citizens, dead for 25 years (originally 10), and made major contributions to the nation. In disrepair since the mid 1970s, it has not added nominees and has not commissioned busts of the 1976 inductees. In 1973 NYU abandoned the Bronx campus, which later became Bronx Community College. In the late 1970s the state completed a $3 million restoration, and more recently $200,000 was spent to restore its 98 bronze busts. In 2001, Bronx Community College organized an ongoing $1 million fund raising effort to rebuild the Hall. www.bcc.cuny.edu/halloffame.
