May 10, 1943 Flights lost in the Aleutians

Two separate flights from U.S. Naval flying squadron VB-136 were lost in the Aleutian Islands on May 10, 1943. Both flights were out on reconnaissance missions from Adak Naval Air Station to gather intelligence on the Japanese occupied island of Kiska (about 250 miles to the east). They both were flying PV-1 Venturas. Flight #29794 never returned. Radio contact was lost, and no wreckage was ever found. Five crew members were lost. The other flight (#29847) barely made it back to Adak N.A.S. and reportedly crashed trying to land. All five crew members perished. My uncle, Ensign Elton Wayne Cooke, was co-pilot on the first flight. He and the other nine members of the VB-136 gave their lives for their county. Rest their souls.
