Our Lady of the Rosary Basilica
Saint Dominic Convent has its origins from the first day of the foundation of Lima, the City of the Kings, in January 1535 with the distribution that was made of the different lots of the Capital of the Viceroyalty. For some time the only chapel in the city was in charge of the Dominicans; We can say that the first baptized in Lima were baptized for them.
This Convent reached its maximum splendor towards the middle of the 17th century due to the innumerable fruits of sanctity and science and the magnificence of its construction. Eighteen bishops came out of this Convent, many teachers and rectors of the University of San Marcos, and in its shadow: Rosa de Lima, Martin de Porres, Martin Barragán, Salvador Ramírez and many others were sanctified.
Even now we can admire the beauty of its cloisters and in its beautiful basilica is the altar where the relics of the three Peruvian saints are preserved and among other images the beautiful carving of the Virgin of the Rosary, declared Patroness of Peru, and which carries in its arms the image of Jesus - Child from whose lips came those phrases: "Rose of my heart, be my wife." The incomparable Chapter House, a center for cultural and scientific meetings, preserves beautiful paintings and carvings, and the large crucifix before which several witnesses saw Saint Martin de Porres raised in ecstasy."
Out of this Convent, the University of San Marcos and the University of San Martin de Porres were both founded.
