The Hunter Cemetery is located just outside the city of Hunter, although still within the city limits. It is 11.16 acres in size, and its technical location is the NW1/4 of the NE1/4 of Section 23, Hunter Township, Cass County, North Dakota.
The cemetery has a two-fold mission in the community; it must provide a permanent resting place for those who have gone before and the landscape should be so beautiful that it will be a source of consolation for the living.
The oldest known marked grave in the cemetery is that of Jane (Abram) Willison, who died in 1881, followed by Martin Arndt who died in 1885. The oldest person by year of birth in the cemetery is Carl G. Meyers who was born in 1810.
A tool shed was erected in the cemetery in 1891 by Lawrence Cook. It was demolished sometime around 1970. A new vault house was erected in 1969. A fence was built in 1891 by George Gallagher and a well was dug in 1889.
In 1935, there were letters to the editor of the local paper commenting on the horrible appearance of the cemetery. In 1941, the Prairie Rose Homemakers Club took over the project of caring for the cemetery. They worked under the supervision of the town board and paid the caretaker from funds solicited from lot owners. During this time, Slim Meyers was caretaker and he transformed it from an eyesore to a place of beauty.
The homemakers continued their charge of the cemetery until the city of Hunter took over when the club disbanded. The city of Hunter continues to own/operate the cemetery through a special cemetery fund, and typically two sextons are responsible for its day-to-day operation.
Steve Petersen Construction, a local business, has been the official grave digger of the cemetery since at least the 2010s.
Some of the sextons and caretakers of the Hunter Cemetery over the years have included Maurice "Slim" Meyers (1941-48), August Nelson, Paul Murch (started ca. 1975), Larry Martin, Carol Siegert, and Dawn Petersen.
