The church of All Saints & St James the Greater, known as the ‘Minster of the Moors' was gifted to the monks at Pontefract by Swein, son of Alric, in the 12th century. The current building dates from the 14th century but has been altered and enlarged over time.
The church is home to some fine memorials, including an excellent 1675 knight in armour, Sir Thomas Wentworth and two plaques to the prolific engineer, Joseph Bramah.
The large well-kept churchyard contains a number of interesting tombstones, ledger tombs and table tombs. A monument commemorates the drowning of 26 children in the Huskar Pit in 1838.
