and turn lefto onto paved road at Gravel Hill Church sign. Go approximately .8 miles until pavement ends (and unimproved road begins) at church that is located on the left side of the road.
According to a sign posted nearby, Gravel Hill Baptist Church was established in 1884. At a Vernon Baptist Association Meeting in 1894, the preacher was J. M. Jackson, moderator was L. M. Nichols, and church clerk
was M. H. Stanley.
The large cemetery, probably 2-3 acres in size, is covered with grass, fenced and well maintained, and is located behind the Church. The first Saturday in June is Cemetery Homecoming. There are two sections divided by a driveway on the South side. Many newer graves in this cemetery are covered with an above-ground slab approximately 12" high. Older burials have small concrete markers about 6" by 18", some of these latter are almost totally eroded and difficult to read. Although there are many unmarked burials in this cemetery, each is identified by some type marker, a brick or rock at head and foot.
