Ridgebury NY was originally called Ridgeberry and the cemetery retains this spelling.
Although the cemetery is located next to the Ridgebury Methodist Church, its earliest burials were from the First Presbyterian Church (organized July 10, 1752). The First Presbyterian Church was originally a co-mingling of Presbyterian and Congregational with a second reorganization (1817) being strictly Presbyterian. The Methodist Church was built later in 1842.
The cemetery is divided into two sections. The land for the upper (old) section was given by Isaac Sergeant; the lower (new) section was purchased in 1866 from Henry Decker.
The cemetery was incorporated in 1866 and continues to be active. Unfortunately, the condition of the older areas is quite poor with many missing and broken headstones.
In 1955 the Pellets Island Cemetery interments were relocated to Ridgeberry Cemetery. Because the original headstones were so badly weathered, a granite monument records the names and dates of the Pellet, Clark and Miller families.
