Sloan's Cemetery
Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri, USA
David is historically significant to the city of Kirksville in that he has been determined to be Kirksville's first settler. The city might have been named for him had not the county court decided to honor his neighbor, Jesse Kirk, and the place became Kirksville rather than Sloansville when it was incorporated in 1841.
David Sloan died in 1842 and was buried on this plot of land which was part of his own farm, at his request. Later, other members of the Sloan family and other families were buried there, making it the first public cemetery, although this was not David Sloan's original intent. This cemetery was known for many years as Sloan's Cemetery. With no additional burials and the Sloan farm being divided up and sold, the cemetery fell into disrepair, was abandoned and forgotten.
It eventually became part of land owned by the International Shoe Factory which was built shortly east of it. In 1954, a 4-H club took interest in Mr. Sloan's grave and with the cooperation of the shoe company restored his broken stone and set it in concrete, placed a fence around the grave and placed a sign on Osteopathy Street marking this historic spot. However, these extras are now gone and only David Sloan's pieced-together tombstone remains. Other buildings are slowing crowding out this historic piece of Kirksville, Missouri.
