Rabindranath-Tagore-Strase 18-20
Berlin-Grünau
Opened in 1920/21 as a forest cemetery on the outskirts of Berlin it now has a size of 27500 m² or 6.8 acres. In 1963 the cemetery was enlarged at its southern end to make room for reburials from the Waldfriedhof Bohnsdorf when those graves had to be relocated as the new Schönefeld airport was being built. Some locally known politicians and artists have found their final resting place in this very remote cemetery.
There is also a section of graves of civilian victims of WW II. Those graves are deemed honorary graves and will remain indefinitely. Otherwise please note that the final resting places in Germany are not eternal, due to lack of space. This cemetery has a "period of repose" of 20 years. Once the time is up for a renewal of the "lease" the cemetery administration will place a small sticker on the gravestone to alert the family to contact the office of the cemetery. Unless the family of the deceased pays for another period of 20 years, or the grave is of historical importance (in that case the city of Berlin will carry the costs), it will be leveled and re-used. Leftover stones will be collected and eventually crushed and used as gravel in road construction.
