Cimetière Saint-Elzéar
Saint-Elzéar, Chaudiere-Appalaches Region, Quebec, Canada
Controlled by the parishioners in 1847, construction of the church began two years later. Thomas Baillargé entrusted to Leander Parent, his student, carrying out the work. Next neoclassical spirit, the composition of the facade reflects the internal arrangements of the building. Thus, the shape of the gable roof and pediment initiated by the return of cornice is interrupted by openings in the axis portals.
Built circa 1893-1894 by home Ferdinand Villeneuve Saint-Romuald, the steeple of the church consists of a perforated drum, surmounted by an arrow flanked by two turrets that are replicas.
Sculpture interior exemplifies the architectural logic of ornamentation in Thomas Baillairgé that the transverse arches of the choir must be based on the corresponding pilasters. The importance of the chorus is highlighted by the continuous treatment of the entablature, which extends to the whole sanctuary, including the transept. The side altars reproduce the choir, Ionic, crowned by a triangular pediment interrupted. The entablature continues in the nave, however receiving a lighter setting.
The church and the sacristy of St. Elzear were classified as historic monuments in 1960.
