The former location of the church and graveyard is now the St. John's Gardens. There is a commemorative cross in the centre of the gardens remembering those buried below. St. John's Church was built in the Deansgate neighbourhood in 1769 by Edward Byrom, the eldest son of the Byrom Family for whom Byrom Street is named. With the growth of Manchester in the late 18th century, there arose a greater demand for churches. The new church, in typical fashion, included a graveyard. According to the commemorative cross, the churchyard holds the mortal remains of over 22,000 parishioners. After the major changes in the city throughout the 19th century, the decline in membership, and consolidation of the Manchester Diocese in the area left St. John's by the wayside. The old church roof collapsed in 1924 and was repaired by 1926. The new roof and the electrics in the church, switched from gas in 1898, were not enough to save it from the changing times. In 1931 the church was demolished and the graveyard turned into the gardens seen today.
