North Cowton is in Richmondshire.
South Cowton is in Hambleton District, as is East Cowton. [http://www.hambleton.gov.uk/parishs/south-cowton]
St Mary's stands above the water meadows of South Cowton, with views of the neighbouring castle on the hill to the south.
Sir Richard Conyers, a supporter of the House of York, erected both buildings between 1450 and 1470 at the start of the Wars of the Roses.
The handsome church, like the castle, is sturdy in character. Inside, craftsmanship is superb, especially the stained glass, wall painting, consecration crosses and roof.
Effigies believed to be of Richard and his two wives lie in the chancel. There is also a porch with a barrel roof and room above, some lovely glass and a strange 'two-faced' carving on a choir stall.
There are commemorative plaques in the church for Lieutenant General Sir Herbert Charles Chermside (buried in the churchyard with his second wife) and Captain Augustus Frederick Cavendish Webb (who was fatally wounded during the Charge of the Light Brigade, and who died in Scutari Hospital and was interred in Haydar Pasha Cemetery, Istanbul).
The church (in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust) is redundant but access to the interior is usually available during daylight hours.
The churchyard is in good condition and still in use.
Burials for North Cowton, which does not have its own cemetery, are to be found mainly in East Cowton Cemetery or St Mary's Churchyard, South Cowton.
PLEASE NOTE:
The track leading to the church from the B1263 (a road between Catterick Bridge and Scorton to the west and Darlington 11 miles to the north, some 8 miles from Northallerton and Richmond) is potholed and should be negotiated with care, especially in adverse weather conditions.
North Cowton is in Richmondshire.
