►Katholischer Friedhof St. Sixtus in Haltern
This Catholic cemetery was opened in 1810 and has a size of 5.7 acres, which makes it the largest of the 7 Catholic Cemeteries managed by the St. Sixtus Congregation. It has 24 sections, and a grassy area for anonymous burials of ashes. There are memorials for the fallen soldiers of the city from both World Wars. Another section is dedicated to the brothers and sisters of the Catholic congregations of this area.
As of 2021 this cemetery has reached its capacity and no more burials are taking place, unless it is in a prearranged plot, or a family grave. There are plots available in the other Catholic Cemeteries:
► Katholischer Friedhof St. Andreas in Hullern
► Katholischer Friedhof St. Antonius in Lavesum
► Katholischer Heilig Kreuz Friedhof in Hamm-Bossendorf
► Katholischer Friedhof St. Joseph in Sythen
► Katholischer Friedhof St. Lambertus in Lippramsdorf
► Katholischer Friedhof St. Maria Magdalena in Flaesheim
There are four (Communal) Lutheran Cemeteries in Haltern:
► Friedhof Sundern
► Friedhof Hullern
► Friedhof Sythen
► Friedhof Flaesheim
There is also an old Jewish Cemetery in Haltern (used from 1769-1939). And a "Bestattungswald" also provides urn burials in a forest setting outside of Haltern.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (25 years in Haltern Am See) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse can decompose naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period, the duration can be extended by another 25 years. Otherwise the grave will be leveled and reused, the marker than used as gravel in road construction. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever. Also the town or owner of the cemetery might find a grave of historical significance and will protect and keep it indefinitely.
