The first organized chruch within the limits of Madison Township, Licking County, was in a hewed log cabin near Bowling Green Prairie in 1810, on the lot now occcupied by the Methodist Church. A graveyard was established here at an early date. The log cabin was a general meeting house used until 1842 when a frame structure was erecterd by the Methodist society. The present building was build in 1858. Preaching here was discontinued in about 1905-6, the graveyard is a tangled mass of briers, poisn ivy and myrtle, and open to the highways. The headstones are down and broken and many are totally obliterated. The place is located in one of the most beautiful valleys of the state, situated on the northside on Hanover road four miles east of Newark.
The cemetery is located on the east side of Bowling Green Cemetery Road NE about 250 feet north of its intersection with Marne Road (Township Road 585).
