Elmwood Cemetery, sometimes referred to as the East Burying grounds, was established in 1837 by order of the town council president, George Sanderson. Many influential individuals from the city are buried there, including Charles Sherman (father of General Sherman), General Henry Geisy, and Darius Tallmadge, known as the Stagecoach king, as well as victims of the 1823 Typhoid fever outbreak that ravaged the twenty-year-old city. It was estimated that one in ten townspeople perished during that time.
