Nicholas Kurtz was born and raised in Avon, Minnesota; the 8th of 12 children born to German/Polish immigrants Jacob and Welhelmina Kurz. He was the first of his family born in America. As an young adult he found work in Rosemount, Minnesota before joining the Army.

Pvt Kurtz served in World War I and was a member of Company H, 308th Infantry, 77th Division. Company H was part of the "Lost Battalion"; a group of nine companies who became surrounded by German troops in the Argonne Forest offensive after punching through German lines and outrunning their flanks. He was wounded in this battle when he was struck by a bullet in the right forearm.

Following his discharge Nick worked as a mason & bricklayer. He married Loretta Lynch in Hastings, Minnesota on February 8, 1921. They had three children: Don, Arlene and Mary.

Nick died tragically on April 4th, 1932. He was walking across Hennepin Ave in downtown Minneapolis near 2nd Ave when he was hit and killed by a commercial truck. Nick resided in Minneapolis at the time of his death.

Nick was survived by his wife, three children, and nine siblings.

He was preceded in death by one infant child, his parents, and two infant siblings. His son Don would later be killed in the Korean War.
