Julia Burghardt was born on 29 September 1860 in the region of Galicia, at the time apart of the Austrian Empire. Julia was a descendant of the aristocratic 'Burghardt' family, which had originated from the region of Aslace in Western Europe. She was Polish and German.

On the 2 May 1897, she would board the SS Arcadia, a ship departing from Hamburg, Germany, along with her children. Her husband had travelled to and remained in Canada a year prior in 1896. Julia and her children would then begin embarking on a voyage across the North Atlantic Ocean along with 1,000 other passengers, the majority being of Ukrainian descent. The family would eventually reach Montreal, Canada, and would then begin travelling westward via rail to Gretna, Manitoba.

On the 28th of July, 1929, two of her sons, Tadeus (1896) and Charles (1900) would be killed in an automobile accident outside Winnipeg, the capital of Canada's western Manitoba province. Prior to the accident, another one of Julia's sons, Rudolph (1899), had passed away in 1922 as a result of unknown circumstances.
