A resident of the Marylebone & Paddington area his entire life, Samuel was one of the seven children of Ernest Buck (1875-1935) and Elizabeth Catherine Buck (nee Smith - 1873-1961) and for a large part of his early childhood his father was away and serving on the Belgian Front during the First World War. He was married in 1928 to Sarah Maud Pearce and they would have three children together (David, Doreen and Norah).
With the declaration of war imminent, Samuel and his brother William 'Billy' Henry Buck (8/10/1903 - 24/05/1940) signed up with the Queen Victoria's Rifles, their father's old regiment.
In May and June of 1940 he and his brother would serve in the Battle of Calais as part of The Queen Victoria's Rifles. As part of a motorcycle based reconnaissance division they were deployed, without motorcycles, to attempt to defend Calais from the advancing German Panzer Divisions heading towards Dunkirk. Samuel was captured in June 1940 by advancing German troops and taken prisoner and held at Stalag 383, Munich, until his death in 1944. His brother was killed in Calais and he remains buried there to this very day.
