Attorney Morehead was born 22 December 1935. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bernard and J.Elizabeth Dixon Morehead of Little Rock, and was the eldest of seven children. He graduated from Dunbar High School in 1952, and attended Arkansas AM&N College (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff), on a combined football, basketball and physics scholarship. He graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
During early childhood, he was baptized at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Little Rock, AR. Later, on his journey of faith, he joined Faith Presbyterian Church in Pine Bluff, AR and continued his Christian walk until the end. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Elder, Clerk of Session and Lay Leader for many years.
In 1970, he received his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law. While enrolled in law school, Attorney Morehead held the position of Director of Public Relations and Information, coupled with being the Instructor of Commercial Law at his Alma Mater. Major duties included handling all of the University's media/press relations and serving as spokesperson on highly sensitive, complex or emergency situations.
During the tenure of Ray Thornton as Arkansas' Attorney General (1970-1972), Attorney Morehead became the African American appointed to serve as Deputy Attorney General in the State of Arkansas.
He spent nearly 45 years in private practice as a criminal law attorney in Pine Bluff, AR. Perhaps one of Southeast Arkansas' most recognizable criminal defense attorneys, he believed everyone was entitled to a competent and vigorous defense. He was committed to his clients and visited them in jail on Christmas and other holidays. If someone came to him, no matter who they were, no matter how hated by the community for an alleged crime, he would take the case. He treated the accused with dignity and humanity.
During the period of 1983 - 1992, Attorney Morehead was elated to be appointed by then Governor William "Bill" Clinton, to a seat on the Board of Visitors of the University, in recognition of his academic mission and role at the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff.
He was a prolific reader, he kept a sharp mind until the end of his life. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, photography, gardening and watching sporting events.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Isaiah Gabriel House; three brothers, Everette Dixon Morehead, Jackie Bernard Morehead, and Frederic Charles Morehead.
Attorney Robert Morehead will forever be loved and dearly missed by his wife, Dr. Qumare "Mikki" Alexander Morehead; two sons, Jarvis Bernard Morehead (Patricia); David Franklyn Morehead; four grandchildren, Alexandra Morehead-House (Tracy); Lauren Clai Elizabeth Morehead; Victoria Faith Alexis Morehead; and William Davidson Mitchell Morehead; three sisters, Maudella Morehead-Parham (Ollie); Miriam Morehead; Clai Morehead Hall (Harry T.), and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends who loved him profoundly.
Family hour was held the evening of March 17. Due to the coronavirus pandemic restrictions, a private burial occurred Wednesday, March 18, 2020, Rev. Harlis Wright officiated. Interment was in Cedar Grove section of Graceland Cemetery, Pine Bluff, AR, by Brown Funeral Home.
