Roddy was the son of Vernon Eugene and Audrey Marie Socks Newlin. He worked with his father at the family business Newlin's Radio & TV Sales and Service in Williamsport, MD for many years, as well as volunteered with the Williamsport Ambulance Service. Roddy had an interest in Civil War history and often visited the battlefields at Gettysburg, PA and Sharpsburg, MD. He was also an Elvis tribute artist and would perform at local nursing homes and retirement communities to make the residents happy.
