Born 1713 in Scotland, he sailed with Captain Hance Hamilton arriving New Castle, Delaware 24 Aug 1729 along with 140 Scotch-Irish at the behest of William Penn to help defend his land in Chester County. He later settled in then York County, PA near Gettysburg.

Married to Florence Morrow, they had 6 children Jean (b. 1742), James (b. 1743), Janet (b. 1745), William (b. 1751), Robert (b. 1753), and John (b. 1754) on their farm in York County, PA. Son John became a General and Congressman and is buried here in this cemetery. Son William was a Revolutionary War Hero.

By about 1783 he moved to Ginger Hill, Washington County with his son John and other Hamilton relatives. He passed away 2 Aug 1798, survived by his wife Florence who passed away in 1800.
