Peter DeWitt was run over at the intersection of Broadway and Pearl Street by NYFD Engine Company 15 which, at the time, was proceeding to a fire in Duane Street. He was taken to the hospital after the accident and died there the next day. His injuries included a dislocated hip, a fractured right forearm as well as internal injuries that hemorrhaged. Coroner William O'Donnell convened an inquest and determined that the Engine was not proceeding on the sidewalk but in the street and concluded the incident was purely accidental. Mr. DeWitt had just returned to New York from a trip around the world. Dr. O'Donnell's son John was a fireman who was killed in April 1854 at a fire in Jennings Clothing Store on Broadway.
